In the heart of the captivating rolling hills, resided a shepherd boy. His being was mostly untarnished, simple yet virtuous. His main role was mainly to look after his herd of sheep.
Their soft bleating and the rustling of the gales through the solo tree on the hilltop were his constant co-dwellers. Day in day, guarding his charges imbued in him a notion of quiet fulfillment.
Yet, there were occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. On one such day from sheer monotony, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous plan.
Stories of predators hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the town. So, the boy decided to leveraged this fear and played a prank on the inhabitants.
One afternoon he raced into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The frightened villagers rushed up the hills to help but saw no wolf.
The boy giggled at the puzzle on their faces. This prank continued for a couple of more days. But, one morning, a real wolf did charge at the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but could rescue only few of his flock. Devastated, he went back to the town here only to receive a scolding on honesty and the consequences of false alarms.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is hard to earn back. It's a story as relevant today as it was anciently.
